  • The Caucasian honey bee

The Caucasian honey bee (Apis mellifera caucasia) originates from the high valleys of the Central Caucasus. Georgia is the “central homeland” for the species, although the bees also can be found in eastern Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Caucasian honey bees are very beneficial for beekeeping:

    • - Gentle and calm on the comb
    • - Ardent brood production - raising strong colonies
    • - Colonies reach full strength in mid-summer, which is good for areas where the highest nectar flow is in mid-summer
    • - Very great user of propolis
    • - Fly despite cold weather, light rain and bad conditions.
    • - In its native area a better honey producer than any other species of honey bees.
    • - Proboscis length is 7.2 mm, therefore it can reach nectar that its competitors cannot.

    The highly esteemed honey

To appreciate this highly revered honey, one has to understand the story behind its tree. Christ's Thorn or Lote tree is well known from ancient time. It is mentioned in the Bible and Quran. All of its parts have medical values. Its seeds are rich in protein; its leaves rich in calcium, iron and magnesium. Has an antimicrobial activity, Analysis of methanolic extracts of Paliurus spina-christi revealed the presence of Gallic acid, caffeic acid, syringic acid & epicotichen acid, while Gas chromatography revealed a wide range of chemical compounds. They were varied in types (sugar, amino acids, phenols, fatty acids and esters).

    Propolis

Propolis or bee glue is a resinous mixture that honey bees produce. The composition of propolis varies from hive to hive, from district to district, and from season to season. Propolis has been used in traditional medicines for thousands of years. The National Institutes of Health rates propolis as "possibly effective" for treating cold sores, genital herpes, and post-surgery mouth pain. Propolis is also used to make cough drops for cough and throat irritation. Propolis is a powerful health balm. Modern tudies show it has anti-cancer properties! Propolis contains as many as 300 active compounds. These components were found to fight cancer in a variety of ways. In addition, propolis was found to mitigate the side effects or toxicity of chemotherapy drugs used in the treatment of cancer. Propolis has a wide range of antibacterial properties as well. In children, propolis has been found to: Prevent respiratory tract infections, Remedy symptoms of the common cold, Prevent middle ear infections. Heals Burns and Prevents Dental Cavities.

    Bee pollen

Bee pollen is the pollen ball that has been packed by worker honeybees into pellets. Bee bread is also the bee pollen with added honey and bee secretions and stored in brood cells. The exact chemical composition depends on the plants the worker bees gather the pollen from, and can vary from day to day, colony to colony. Average composition is 40-60% simple sugars (fructose and glucose), 2-60% proteins, 3% minerals and vitamins, 1-32% fatty acids, and 5% diverse other components. Bee pollen has been touted by herbalists as a treatment for a variety of medical conditions.

    Pollen

Pollen is a fine to coarse powdery substance comprising pollen grains. Bee pollen contains almost all of the nutrients required by the human body to thrive. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, lipids and fatty acids, enzymes, carotenoids and bioflavonoids — making it an antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agent that strengthens the capillaries, reduces inflammation, stimulates the immune system and lowers cholesterol levels naturally. In fact, bee pollen contains more protein than any animal source and more amino acids than equal weight of eggs or beef … and those are just some of the top bee pollen benefits.

  • Georgia has a longest history of beekeeping.

Georgia has a long history of beekeeping. So far, the oldest remains of honey have been found in Georgia. Archaeologists have found honey remains on the inner surface of clay vessels unearthed an ancient tomb, dating back to some 5,500 years ago. In ancient Georgia, honey was packed for people's journeys into the afterlife. And more than one type, too – along for the trip were linden, berry, and a meadow-flower variety.
